(BANG) - REM are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The US rockers are to be honoured along with Van Halen Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Ronettes and Patti Smith at the annual ceremony.
REM frontman Michael Stipe admits he is thrilled the band's work has been recognised.
He said: "It's really an honour that someone took the time to look backward and recognise what we've done in our past."
REM's original drummer Bill Berry is expected to attend the event, to be held on March 12 in New York, and speculation is rife he may even join his former bandmates on stage on the night.
Berry quit the band in October 1997, two years after collapsed on stage after suffering a brain aneurysm, citing personal reasons.
To be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame, which is housed in a museum in Cleveland, artists must have released a first single or album at least 25 years before being nominated.
